How checkouts work
What a checkout is. In 501 (or 301, 701) you count down from the start to exactly zero. The checkout is the finish: the one, two or three darts that take you from what’s left to zero, with the last dart in a double under the standard double-out rule. The 50 bull counts as a double; the outer 25 doesn’t.
Why 170 is the top. Three darts score at most 180 (three treble 20s), but the last one has to be a double, and the biggest double is the bull at 50. Treble 20, treble 20, bull: 60 + 60 + 50 = 170. Nothing higher can be finished in one visit, so the chart starts there.
Why 169, 168, 166, 165, 163, 162 and 159 can’t be finished. Your last dart is a double worth 50 at most, so the first two darts have to do the rest, and two darts can’t make every number: they top out at 120 and skip some totals on the way (119, for instance, isn’t a two-dart score). For those seven numbers no pair of darts leaves you on a double, so the chart marks them “no finish”. Score to leave a number you can take out next visit.
Treble first. The chart puts the treble first and keeps the double for last, because a treble that drops into the single bed still leaves you something to go at. On 121 the route is T20 T11 D14; land the first dart in single 20 and you’re on 101 with two darts, which is still a finish (T17 Bull). The finder’s “if a dart misses” lines are exactly that calculation. The chart also prefers doubles that halve cleanly: miss D20 into the single and you’re on D10; miss D16 and you’re on D8, then D4.
Leave yourself a double. When there’s no finish, the job of the visit is to leave a number you can take out in one dart next time: 32, 40 and 16 are the favourites because of how they halve. The same goes mid-visit: if the treble misses and the finish is gone, don’t leave an odd number.
Other out modes. Straight out means any dart can finish, so a single will do and 180 is the top. Master out means the last dart must be a double or a treble. Switch the finder to either and it recomputes; the printed chart below is the double-out chart, which is what nearly every pub and league plays.

Checkout questions
What is the highest checkout in darts?
170, taken out with T20 T20 Bull: two treble 20s (60 + 60) and the 50 bull, which counts as a double. Three darts can score 180, but under double out the last dart has to be a double, so 170 is the most you can finish in one visit.
Why can’t you finish on 169?
Because no pair of darts leaves you on a double. The last dart can be worth at most 50 (the bull), and two darts can’t make every total up to 120, so 169 has no three-dart double-out finish. The same is true of 168, 166, 165, 163, 162 and 159: with 169 these are the seven “bogey numbers” between 2 and 170. On one of them, score to leave yourself a finish for the next visit.
What is the best way to finish 24?
Go for D12. If the dart drops into the single 12 you’re on 12, which is D6, and a single there leaves 6 for D3. Doubles that halve cleanly are why 24, 32 and 40 are good numbers to leave.
What is the highest two-dart checkout?
110, with T20 Bull. Anything above 110 needs three darts.
What is the checkout for 121?
T20 T11 D14. If the first dart lands in the single 20 you’re on 101 with two darts, and that is still a finish: T17 Bull.
What is the best double to leave?
32 (D16) is the favourite: a miss into the single 16 leaves 16 (D8), then 8 (D4), 4 (D2) and 2 (D1), so you can keep halving all the way down. 40 (D20) is the other classic, because the single 20 leaves 20 for D10.
